RÝros, Norway

No matter where you are in RÝros, you can see the old baroque church. It dominates the stamp, just as it has always dominated RÝros since it was built in 1780. With the smelting works and bell, the picture of RÝros is complete.

The mining town of RÝros was founded in 1644 at the same time as the copper works, and the mine was worked right up until l977. In the twenties, the Central Office of Historic Monuments took the initiative in protecting both the buildings and works. Though initially scoff ed at, these ideas came to be fully accepted later. Today, even the slag heaps, those monuments to toil, are protected in addition to about ninety of the town's buildings.
