Ferder, Norway
Ferder Lighthouse is regarded as the gatepost to the Oslo Fjord and has been
guiding sailors for three hundred years. The first Ferder light was quite
simply an open coal fire, placed at the highest point on the Store Ferder
island in 1697 The fire was roofed in 1801 and fifty years later it was
replaced by a dioptric apparatus.
Located on the island of Tristein, the present-day Ferder Lighthouse went into operation in 1857.
It consists of a 43 m tall cast iron tower (built at Baerums Verk), with a dioptric apparatus
and a visibility of 19 nautical miles across the fjord.
